Hurt: Johnny Cash vs. NIN, which version do you prefer?

I grew up with Johnny Cash playing in the background. I%26#039;ve always loved his stuff, even before it was %26quot;cool%26quot; to do so. I think it%26#039;s the simple arrangement that does it for me, because it enhances the lyrics. For that reason, I prefer Cash%26#039;s version. You?

Cash%26#039;s version was better. He brought out the pain, guilt and regret of the lyrics, while NIN wouldn%26#039;t quite keep the self-involvement out. There%26#039;s a lot of living between a 20-something and a dying 70-year-old, and the difference between the two versions is a perfect example.

originals are always better!|||NIN the reason because it just shows how good of a song Trent did for someone famous like Cash to make a cover of Hurt. Cash was influenced by NIN Hurt and it just shows how much respect NIN is given because someone so legendary did a cover of him|||I love NIN, but Johnny Cash brings something amazing to the song, that coupled with a such a wonderful video, I%26#039;ll have to say Johnny%26#039;s version is the best.|||Originals are not always better, as evidenced by Johnny%26#039;s haunting performance. Ask Trent Reznor, even he will admit it.|||I have to say that my favorite is still Trent%26#039;s.

However, I love Cash%26#039;s cover dearly precicesly for the reasons you listed. I think it%26#039;s a brilliant, poignant cover.|||Honestly, I%26#039;m not a huge fan of this song. But if I had to pick one it would be the Johnny Cash version.

Personally, I prefer Trent%26#039;s version, simply because his voice appeals to me more than Cash%26#039;s.|||whats weird for me is i payed more attention to johnny cash%26#039;s version than i did trent%26#039;s..does that make any sense..i%26#039;d say johnny%26#039;s version for me was better..i guess it had more feeling to me..|||I have a world of respect for the Man in Black. Johnny Cash!|||I%26#039;ve never really been a huge NIN fan, so I actually heard the Johnny Cash version long before the original. When I did get around to listening to the NIN version, I couldn%26#039;t help thinking that it sounded like the cover. I know this probably sounds completely stupid, but what I mean is that in Johnny Cash%26#039;s rendition, the way he delivers the lyrics and like you said the simplicity of the arrangement just seems to suit the song much better. So in that sense, his version sounds to me like the way the song was intended to sound. Long story short, I prefer the Johnny Cash version.|||I honestly like both versions but it depends on the mood i%26#039;m in. Trent%26#039;s version is so low and sensitive like he is really at rock bottom and this is his last confession but Johnny%26#039;s is raw and really intense and filled with a lifetime a misery. Both are excellent and and both artists bring different dynamics to the song.|||Johnny Cash did an interesting take on it, but I%26#039;m gonna have to go with NIN. They%26#039;re one of my favorite artists ever and that%26#039;s one of the most powerful songs I%26#039;ve ever heard.|||I prefer Cash%26#039;s version basically for the vocal depth that he brings to the song. he turned it into his own song, a lot of the covers he did were amazing too like rusty cage. and the video gets me every time|||I still think its funny how people assume Johnny Cash did the original. Being a fan of NIN i have to say I prefer the original but Johnny Cash did the song justice, which is a positive.

I agree with some cover versions being better than the originals, in my opinion Nirvana%26#039;s version of %26#039;The Man Who Sold The World%26#039; appealed to me more than David Bowie%26#039;s, he is still a legend tho.|||Originals aren%26#039;t always better - but this is really an %26quot;apples and oranges%26quot; comparison.

Doing a cover doesn%26#039;t mean necessarily doing it better than the artist did the way that the original artist did - it means spinning off, doing it a different way, from a different perspective, for a different reason.

I am very moved by Cash%26#039;s version - just as I am emotionally charged and moved by Reznor%26#039;s original. The difference is ... well, each is beautiful in their own way.

On most days I would prefer to listen to Cash because I like the simplicity. NIN takes a little bit of %26#039;hyping up%26#039; for me to get into it, and I%26#039;m not able to meet him in that emotional place most days.

Saul|||I obviously prefer the NIN version, as I am a huge Nails fan. I usually like original versions better than covers anyway. That said, I do think that the Johnny Cash version was really good. I can%26#039;t think of anybody else that could have done a better job covering a NIN song. The emotion he sang it with and the correlation between his life and the lyrics was great. The simple arrangement honestly left me wanting, but that is probably because I love Trent%26#039;s version so much. I%26#039;m a big Cash fan too (my dad raised me on it, and it stuck with me), and that was really one of the stand out songs on that album. You can really hear a frailty in his voice.|||Cash
